Some Tips for Moving with Pets
Moving can be a very exciting time, especially if you’ve found the perfect real estate property to call home. However, there are also stressors that come along with moving, whether it’s across town or across the country. One of the best things you could possibly do if you can afford to is hire a professional moving company to get your items from place to place. But this still doesn’t address the need to move valuables from breakable framed paintings to your pets. Your pets are probably one of the most valuable possessions you will be moving in your car to your new home (only trumped by your children if you have any). So how do you reduce the stress that can be placed on dogs and cats during the moving process? Keep reading to find out!
Prepare Ahead of Time
Before your move make sure to be prepared for all your pet’s needs. Make sure to pack them an overnight bag which includes sufficient food, water, and potty bags. In addition to having an overnight bag, also visit the vet if your pet gets overly stressed or has car sickness. A vet can write a short-term prescription in order to help you get through all the various problems you may come across to make the move go as smooth as possible. Don’t forget vet records if you’re moving out of the area as well that you can provide to a new vet.
On the Day of the Move
On the day of the move is one of several days that your pet could be at risk. Make sure that they have their collars and tags secured around their neck prior to doing anything else. Also make sure you have a safe space to contain your pet if you have movers, or even friends, helping you bring things in and out of the house. You don’t want your dog’s tail stepped on or your cat bolting out the door because someone left it open.
Use Caution at Your New Home
When you transport your pet to the new house, use a little extra caution. Make sure your pet is kenneled and isn’t released until it is securely in the new home. A new neighborhood can be disorienting and if a pet gets loose, it can often be hard to find them. For cats, consider release them in a small room or bathroom with a litter box setup. Let them get used to this smaller space first before allowing them into other parts of the house. For dogs, consider using baby gates to restrict the areas they can go until they learn the rules in the new home.
Use Caution Moving Long Distance
Caution is key with pets in new places. While you will want to let them play and explore, you need to do what’s best for them. This includes using caution when moving long distances. Once you have your pet in the car, whether in a crate or using a pet hammock, make sure that they are calm. Additionally, you need to provide sufficient breaks for a pet to get out and stretch their legs. This is also a good time to let them potty and get water. Every couple of hours is ideal.
Don’t let your move be stressful and your new home cause you grief because of your pets. Just make sure to keep the above tips in mind. Your pets are also part of the family, so treat them as such.
